Abstract
Lycopeneisanimportantnaturalredpigmentwithstrongsingletoxygenandperoxidefreeradicalquenchingability.Ethanoldirectlydestroystheepithelialcellsofgastricmucosa,causingoxidativedamageandinflammation.Toevaluatetheeffectoflycopeneontheethanolinducedgastricinjury,adultmaleKunmingmicewererandomlydividedintonormalcontrol,lycopenecontrol,gastricinjurycontrol,omeprazole(20mg/kg)positivecontrol,andlycopeneexperimentalgroups(atdosesof10,50,,andmg/kgbodyweight)inthisstudy.Thegeneralandpathologicalevaluation,gastricsecretion,aswellasthelevelsofantioxidantandinflammatoryfactorsweredetected.Inlycopeneexperimentalgroups,theamountofgastricjuicewerelowerthanthatinthegastricinjurycontrolgroup;thelevelsofT-SOD,andthelevelsofMDAandinflammatoryfactors(MMP-9andMCP-1)decreased.However,generalandpathologicalevaluationofgastrictissuesrevealedthatlycopene(especiallyathighdoses)couldaggravateacutegastricmucosalinjuryinducedbyethanol.Therefore,lycopene(especiallyathighdoses)aggravatesacutegastricmucosalinjurycausedbyethanol,butthiswasnotduetooxidativestressorinflammatoryfactors.Inlycopenecontrolgroup,thelevelsofMTL,T-SOD,andNOincreased,butthelevelsofALTandASTdecreased,indicatingthatlycopenehasaprotectiveeffectonthestomachandliverwhenethanolwasnttaken.Itremindsusthat,whenalcoholisconsumedinlargequantities,consumptionoflycopeneproductsshouldbecarefullyconsidered.
